Simple Swaps

Like I have said before, when starting your zero waste journey you need to start small in order to have the greatest success. Here I will list out some simple swaps you can make in the beginning of your journey.

1. Straw
The easiest swap you can make is to ditch that single use plastic straw for a reusable one. Reusable straws come in many different forms. You can find glass, stainless steal, and even bamboo straws! You might be asking, "Am I supposed to carry a straw around with me at all times??" The answer is yes! But, there are straws that collapse down and fit into a small container so, you don't have to carry a bulky straw everywhere you go. Don't forget, when ordering to say, "No straw please."

2. Water bottle
How much do plastic single use water bottles cost? 20 bucks for 24 bottles. How much to reusable water bottles cost? 20 bucks for and endless amount of uses. The recommended amount of water that a person should consume each day is about 1/2 a gallon. This means that a reusable water bottle will pay for its self after 2 weeks! Plus, the water that comes out of the tap is cleaner than water in bottles. This is because there are no regulations on how the water should be filtered when being added to bottles. There are however, strict regulations on the water quality for towns and homes. So, its a win win for reusables!

3. Bags
Many of you go to the grocery store, pick up the items you need, and walk out with a plastic bag (or many), and don't even think about the consequences. Don't worry, I was guilty of it too at one point, until I found canvas bags. These come in many sizes and designs. They'll match any style, I promise.

4. Toothbrush
There is more information under my bathroom swaps. But switching out your regular plastic toothbrush for one made out of bamboo is just one easy swap anyone can make!

5. Compost
This one isn't really a swap but it is very crucial when going zero waste. Composting is a very simple process, that will eliminate 2/3 of the waste you produce. If you are unsure on how to compost check out my page on composting, or see if your town as a location where you can drop of your compostable materials.
